Dedicated to
supporting and enhancing public education
North
Stonington
Education
Foundation
The North Stonington Education Foundation is a
501(c)(3) non-profit, charitable organization
founded in 2004 to support and enhance our town’s public education
For the 2006/2007 academic year the NSEF
funded more than $5,000 in Grants and Programs
Wheeler High School Book Club
An outgrowth of the NSEF’s participation in the One Book One Region
program during the summer of 2006 resulted in the funding of a Wheeler
High School Book Club.
This
voluntary book discussion group supports the interests of the students
while providing a forum for students to meet regularly and to discuss
current literature and nonfiction books.
What Is In Your Piggy Bank?
All Wheeler High School Seniors attended a personal finance workshop led
by professionals in the field. This program provided the
foundation to put them on the road to financial stability.
One Book
One Region
North Stonington once again actively participated in the
One Book One Region project for 2007.
The selection was Across A Hundred Mountains
by Reyna Grande. The NSEF purchased copies for distribution at
Wheeler Library and Wheeler High School.
Students read the book over the summer for class discussions
in the fall. A
discussion of Across a Hundred Mountains was held in the Wheeler Library.
Wheeler Quilting Circle
Students, staff and community members have come
together at
Wheeler
High School to quilt and
provide warmth and comfort to individuals and families dealing with
cancer. This activity not
only teaches young people to quilt but to work towards something bigger
by giving their time and using old and new skills to reach out to
others. The quilting circle
was able to make a memory quilt with
donated flannel shirts of a
long-standing family in this community.
The quilt was donated to an oncologist in Westerly, to be used to provide comfort to
those dealing with cancer.
The group hopes to make one quilt per year that will be auctioned off to
provide funds for future quilts.
Community members who
like to sew and might like to join this friendly circle are encouraged
to join them on Thursday afternoons from 2:30 to 6:00 p.m.
Donations of 100% cotton fabric, quilt batting, muslin, old/clean
sheets (for backing), old flannel shirts in good condition, and thread
are also needed.
Wheeler Library’s Summer Reading
Program
Wheeler Library's Summer Reading Program, "Clue into
Reading
at Wheeler Library", received funding from the North Stonington
Education Foundation for special events throughout the summer. Children
from North Stonington enjoyed art and nature detective
programs, a puppet show, an amazing magician, and science activities
that focused on exploring the senses.
The Foundation's collaboration with Wheeler Library helps
increase family visits to the library and book borrowing.
Reading
skills then continue to develop and sharpen over the summer.
