Mr. James Patton '88

Mr. James Patton, a member of the Wheeler High School Class of 1988, is honored as a Distinguished Alumni in recognition of his lifelong commitment to peace, human rights, and global development. He earned degrees in Biology, Philosophy, and Art from the University of Connecticut in 1994 and went on to complete both a Master of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University’s Fletcher School and a Master of Divinity at Harvard Divinity School between 2000 and 2004.


Throughout his career, Mr. Patton has worked to support peaceful development worldwide. As a Peace Corps volunteer, he spent several years in rural Paraguay teaching beekeeping and implementing sustainable development programs. He conducted field research on human rights issues in Bolivia and Cambodia, and served four years in Colombia coordinating human rights and conflict transformation projects for the Nobel Peace Prize–winning American Friends Service Committee.


As a Foreign Affairs Officer at the United States Department of State, he contributed to expeditionary diplomacy teams supporting stabilization efforts in southern Sudan during the country’s historic independence referendum. Mr. Patton has also received numerous grants and fellowships to assess community needs and help develop resources that empower local populations while mitigating sources of conflict.


Mr. Patton’s dedication to fostering peace, supporting human development, and inspiring future generations reflects the values and impact celebrated by the Wheeler High School Distinguished Alumni program.
