Larry Chappel '70

Mr. Larry Chappell, a member of the Wheeler High School Class of 1970, is honored as a Distinguished Alumni in recognition of his lifelong dedication to education, athletics, and community service. He earned his degree in Education from Central Connecticut State University and went on to spend 32 years as a physical education teacher at North Stonington Elementary School, retiring in 2006.


In addition to his work in the classroom, Mr. Chappell served as the Girls Cross Country Coach, leading his teams to state championships in 1999 and 2000. In recognition of his lasting impact, the North Stonington Education Foundation dedicated the elementary school track in his honor—a testament to his commitment to promoting physical fitness and well-being among young people.


Following his retirement, Mr. Chappell has continued to support youth through his service on the Juvenile Review Board. His commitment to the community extends further through his role as minister of the North Stonington Bible Church and as Chaplain of the North Stonington Volunteer Fire Department.


Mr. Chappell’s enduring contributions to education, youth development, and community life reflect the values and impact celebrated by the Wheeler High School Distinguished Alumni program.
